Pre-Lesson Preparation (Recommended)

Before Lesson 1 begins, there are two small but helpful things you can do:

1)  Visit the Genki Website – Study Room

It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the Genki website, specifically the Study Room, which contains the Dialogue videos used throughout the lessons. These videos are a great way to get comfortable with the material and listening flow ahead of time.

2)   Review Numbers, Days, and Time

If you have time before the program begins, take a look at the GENKI textbook to et to know the main characters as well as some basic Japanese words, including greetings, numbers, days and time.

  • Hiragana is on pages 20, 21 and 22
  • Katakana is on pages 24 and 25
  • The book’s main characters are introduced on page 28

Quick Note on Hiragana & Katakana

Hiragana and katakana are best learned independently through short practice resources. Genki gradually moves away from romaji, so having even a basic familiarity with kana will help you feel more confident early on. For that reason, class time is focused on grammar, structure, listening, and practical usage rather than extended kana instruction.
